The Narcotic Drugs and Psychotropic Substances act, 1985 was passed and came in to force on 14-11-1985.it is a special Law enacted by the Parliament. Its objects is to control and regulate the operations relating to Narcotic Drugs and Psychotropic substances. The primary aim of this Act is to protect public welfare and danger to public health and to guard the society From the social evils.

The Act as originally passed in 1985 was spread over six Chapters comprising 83 sections. Various terms and expressions used in the Act are defined in chapters.
